My movie finally came out!!
I am totally one of those crazy fan girls that you saw all over the TV this weekend going insane for Twilight. I went to the midnight showing on Thursday night with my 2 friends Megan and Michelle. We all wore matching Team Edward shirts and acted like excited school girls. It was great. I went to go see it again Friday night (sans the Team Edward shirt) because I love Twilight just that much.
The movie made $35 million just on Friday and the professional money guessers are saying it may top $70 million opening weekend. The sequel was greenlit by Summit entertainment today. All of this is great since I LOVE TWILIGHT.
The books are, of course, way more magnificent than the movie, but the movie held its own, I thought. It was directed by Catherine Hardwicke who also did Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown. Both indie films (amazing ones btw) and she made Twilight have that feel also. The beginning especially had that 'this is a low budget indie movie' feel but the some of the stunt work held up to the bigger Hollywood blockbuster bar.
For me, Jasper, one of the vampires, stole the movie. He had few lines and not too much screen time, but he was EXACTLY what you picture when you read the book. The actor, Jackson Rathbone, did an amazing job bringing the character to life and staying true to the book. He is easily my new favorite vampire.
I think the way they did promotion for this movie was tricky. The book, and now the movie, at it's core, is a love story. The previews made sure you knew that it was about vampires and fighting, not so much the love story. And the love story is what the movie was for about a hour and a half. The last half hour was easily the best part of the movie and had the most action, but I can see many movie goers (especially boys) being seriously annoyed by then that they got tricked into this movie. Hence, I believe that is why there are somewhat negative reviews so far.
Then there are the die hard fan girls. They are all mad because its not an exact replication of the book. Those people annoy ME to no end. You can't fit a 600 page book into a 2 hour movie. You just can't. Things have to be edited to save time and tell the story. They had to know it was going to happen. Maybe it doesn't bother me that everything wasn't in the movie because I have a horrible memory and don't remember all the details of the book. Either way, get over it evil pre-teens.
I've been watching all the press that the actors have been doing for the last week for the movie and I have to say, Never in my life have I seen 2 lead actors so awkward in front of the camera! Both Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are awkward and antsy when they do interviews. They don't look at the camera half the time, they play with their hair, hide their faces and act ultimately uncomfortable. Its so strange. The rest of the cast does fine, but those 2 are just so weird.
Well, Twilight is corny and silly and I LOVE IT. I'm fascinated by the vampires, love the story and now, Jackson Rathbone. Everyone should read the book and then go see the movie. In that order because otherwise I'm not so sure you would like the movie at all.
Twilight kicks Harry Potters ASS.
